Why no cell phones in class?

We discussed in class the importance of non-verbal cues and looked at the impact adolescence has on learning development (see below). We also talked about how technology can negatively impact social development because our focus is  removed from everything else.

So for our blog post using the above chart, pick one element of development under Early or Middle Adolescence and make an argument for or against using a phone in school. Then go online and find an article that supports or negates your position and give us a brief summary of what the article states.

For example: During Early Adolescence as my intellectual interests expand I need a phone to engage more with what I'm interested in studying. The article I found talks about how 75% of students using cell phones in class are performing worse than those without. https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/04/do-smartphones-have-a-place-in-the-classroom/480231/

Do not copy my example.

  1. During the Middle Adolescence period of a teenager's life, you may start to think, "What is my purpose here?". The meaning of life doesn't involve that one piece of technology you always have in your hand. Therefore, using a phone, specifically in school, will NOT help you succeed at many of life's opportunities or obstacles. https://dmohankumar.wordpress.com/2011/10/14/10-disadvantages-to-allowing-kids-to-have-cell-phones-in-schools/

    1. Good Emily. I really like the angle you took considering the greater purpose aspect of adolescent development. Your source alluded to it but didn't go there enough. In the future use your sources to help support your opinions.

  2. I feel that phones should be allowed because if a group of kids have a group project to do during class, they can do so easily and effectively. However, the article I saw said that the phones can become distraction during class because either one is texting or just looking things up. http://cellphones.lovetoknow.com/Cons_of_Cell_Phones_in_School

    1. Ok Rachel, but connect it to adolescent development. How is distraction a problem for young people growing up? Use your source to support your arguments.

  3. There are two sides to the cell phones in school argument: yay and nay. I believe that cell phones should be allowed in school for many reasons. They can be used for group projects and assignments. Though some schools supply laptops, it's easier to use a cell phone for these things.

    1. Fair point. I'd disagree that cell phones are easier to use than a laptop for school purposes. I'd also question the legitimacy of that website. It's not supported by much in the way of research and facts. Be careful about your sources in the future.

  4. I don't think so. But whatever a school's approach to technology, cell phones seem to be nearly ubiquitous. But cell phones distract students from schoolwork and class activities,it'sbad.
