ReplyDeleteThis Talk is about how you can connect with depressed friends. I chose this Talk because my best friend has depression and I was curious to see if my conversation was good or needed improvement. The Talk was made by Bill Bernat, who is a recovering addict with bipolar depressive disorder. He said that letting the person know you're there for them and to ask them how they feel (both emotionally and about you checking up on them). He also says that asking to help you and do little things with you helps them emotionally because they subconsciously know they're making you life easier or better, depending on the task. Talking to them about totally normal and everyday things is the best thing to do, since a lot of people might walk on glass around them and ask about their mental disorder. Bill made a very good presentation for various reasons. He spoke from experience and had little side stories and experiences to tie into the whole talk. Since Bill is also a comedian, he made little jokes, which uplifted the audience, since he was speaking of such a serious and sad topic. Though Bill did not have any visual aid, it was still a great presentation. He used his hands and walked around the stage to help explain his points. It was simple and easy to follow along. He was also dressed neatly and simply, so you don't get very distracted. I think his presentation is very important for people to see. Not only for the topic, but to observe good public speakers.

ReplyDeleteThis specific Ted Talk is about how different social media platforms and the internet has an affect on the emotional status of a person. This talk was delivered by Scott Galloway who is a teacher at NYU. I picked this one because the internet has become a part of our lives. Many people can not seem to imagine living without it. However, it is good to find out what effects the internet has on our mental status. What stuck out to me was that he used an image of the body to describe what each website is to the majority of people and which organ it would be. He makes a good presentation, making eye contact, walking around, cracking jokes, and using a screen to help him explain everything.

ReplyDeleteIone Wells is a writer and activist who tells the story of the night she was assaulted on her way home from a train station in London. I chose this talk because her message to the audience and to the rest of the viewers speaks to me in many different ways. She explains how she wrote a letter to her attacker informing him that it was not only her that he hurt but everyone she was associated to including her family, neighbors, and coworkers. She goes on to tell him that the next day after the assault happened, she went right back on to that same train and walked home at night alone again. She wasn't afraid and what happened to her didn't stop her from continuing to live her normal, everyday life. Sexual assault is something that shouldn't be ignored. So, Ione published this letter in a school newspaper and it went viral. She received messages and other letters from people all over who experienced the same thing. This inspired her to start a campaign using the hashtag #NotGuilty. She goes on to talk about how the media was able to bring together all these people who were too afraid to get the same message across that sexual assault is real, and needs to be addressed. However, she does point out that social media is a way for us to react to problems in the world, especially injustices, without actually reacting. To conclude her talk, Ione asks the audience to think before reacting to social media and injustices so that they don't cause more trouble.
Overall, Ione gave an inspiring presentation that not only had an amazing message and story, but she was also very emotional towards the subject, which reflects how we should also react. One aspect that really stood out for me was how she was able to be professional about the issue and how she was so young because she is an great role model for our generation.
